In the days afterwhat can only be described as a truly tragic week in the United States, there is an imagebeing called “iconic” making waves on social media, ashotthe photographer who took it almost missed.
The image, taken by Jonathan Bachman for Reuters in Baton Rouge,is a startling juxtaposition of a woman calm and poised in a breezy summer dress, with officers dressed in riot gear, some with rifles drawn.
Demonstrators had gathered outside the citys police department to protest Tuesdays police killing of Alton Sterling.
Bachman saidbetween 100-200 protesters were blocking traffic on a highway when law enforcement officers dressed in full riot gear showed up and told the demonstrators to move to the sidewalk.
Some moved, some yelled, but the woman refused to budge an inch.
I photographed someone arguing with an officer and then I looked over my shoulder and saw her there and she had every intention of not moving, he said. She just stood there and made her stand. I was just happy to be able to capture something like that.
The woman was quickly one of 100 people detained, but Bachman knew when he checked his camera that he’dcaptured a remarkable photo of peaceful civil disobedience.
That was the first image I transferred to Reuters because I knew it was going to be an important photo, he said. You can take images of plenty of people getting arrested, but I think this one speaks more to the movement and what the demonstrators are trying to accomplish here in Baton Rouge.
As soon as it was published, the photo went viral on social media, with several outlets crowning it “iconic.”
And it brought out strong emotions.
As of Sunday night, it was reported that the womanwas still in jail.
As for Bachman, he is humbled by the response to his photo.
Im just out here trying to tell the story of whats going on in Baton Rouge, he said, and its very humbling to be able to take a photo that really resonates with a lot of people.
